This year, opt for the couch potato costume and take Promocodewatch tips on which movies to add into your movie marathon playlist this Halloween.

New Horror Movies for Halloween

Check out some of these recently released movies for your dose of Halloween thrills this year!

31 The newest movie from Rob Zombie is out now in select movie theaters and is our top choice for new movie to watch on Halloween 2016. The story revolves around a group of carnival workers who get taken hostage and are forced to play a game for their lives... against a bunch of crazy clowns. Yes, sadistic clowns. Judging from Zombie's previous work (see The Devil's Rejects), it's safe to say this is one you won't want to watch with your grandma. Get tickets for 31 this Halloween 2016 at Fandango.

The Purge: Election Year Residents in the fantasy world of The Purge will take to the streets and begin the violent Purge again this year... as soon as you start the movie. The Purge: Election Year is out now on DVD and provides some particularly timely Halloween 2016 movie thrills. The story takes place during an election year and features a female presidential candidate. So many similarities! If the movie is even half as violent as our current election, it should be a thriller. Rent The Purge: Election Year from Amazon or Apple iTunes.

Ghostbusters Yes, we're aware the new Ghostbusters reboot is pretty much a total flop... but that doesn't mean you shouldn't at least give it a shot. There are laughs to be found and this Halloween, it's all about the ghosts anyway, so this movie is perfect for those who will be movie marathoning on Halloween 2016. Ghostbusters is out now on DVD and features an all-star cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth, among others.

Batman: The Killing Joke For a little animated excitement in a 2016 Halloween movie, try out the newest installment of Batman in Batman: The Killing Joke. The Joker has escaped Arkham Asylum and has attacked the family of Commissioner Gordon. It's up to Batman to clean up the mess. With Mark Hamill reprising his role as the voice of the Joker, Batman: The Killing Joke is a movie not to miss this year, especially for our nerds out there!

Green Room Green Room came out on DVD this summer and is a creepily good addition to the Halloween 2016 movie marathon. Starring Sir Patrick Stewart as a skinhead ringleader, this movie provides plenty of frights in all the best ways. From IMDB, "A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar." Yep, this one is going to be bloody.

Classic Thrillers for Halloween 2016

If you've got a taste for something from the vault, check out these classic thrillers for Halloween this year!

Cape Fear One of the most powerful thrillers for this Halloween is by none other than Martin Scorsese. Starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis, this one is legendary from top to bottom. The story centers around a man who was wrongfully accused of a rape (Robert De Niro) and the revenge he exacts on the lawyer who got him there (Nick Nolte) when he gets out 14 years later. De Niro nails a haunting performance as a man with nothing to live for other than the misery of someone else. It's a great movie and perfect for Halloween 2016!

Taxi Driver Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese are featured in another classic film for Halloween in 1976's Taxi Driver. And again, De Niro nails it as the mentally unstable protaganist, this time in the form of a Vitenam veteran working nights as a taxi driver in New York City. The thrills begin when De Niro starts giving into his need for violence against a society that is overly self-indulgent. This movie gets viewers on the edge of their seats with absolutely no special effects or computer editing. It's flawless! And perfect for this Halloween.

Alien Another 70s classic, Alien makes the list and is one of our all-time favorite Sci-Fi Horror movies. Sigourney Weaver in the lead role shows how being a hostage in space should be done! A space vessel that receives an unknown distress call finds disaster when they attempt to help, naturally. This is the epitome of alien movie and if you haven't seen it somehow, add it to your Halloween 2016 movie list!

Silence of the Lambs If you haven't seen Silence of the Lambs yet, do yourself a favor this Halloween and get scared with the master, Anthony Hopkins. Jodie Foster bolsters this dynamic duo under the direction of Jonathan Demme. Taken from IMDB, "A young FBI cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims." This one was creepy when it came out in 1991 and still manages to make our skin crawl! Grab yourself a copy at Best Buy and enjoy it every year.

The Shining The best movie on this list is definitely The Shining. This classic 1980 Kubrick film stars Jack Nicholson as the crazed protagonist. After undertaking a winter caretake position at a mountain resort, Nicholson's character becomes possessed by the negative energies that live in the building and is pushed to the ultimate limits. We won't give away any spoilers, but trust us when we say this is one of the best movies ever made and perfect to watch on Halloween 2016. If you love this movie, check out all of the conspiracies surrounding it and the director, Stanley Kubrick, in the movie Room 237, available on Netflix.
